When the hot summer arrives, homeowners across Southwestern Ontario rush to turn on their air conditioners. Air conditioners are a great way to keep cool during our hot and humid Ontario summers — when they’re working properly that is!

If you’re noticing that your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home as efficiently as it was last season, try these troubleshooting tips.

7 Tips To Troubleshoot Your Inefficient Air Conditioner

1. Change the filter

While every furnace filter has its own recommendations for how often it should be changed, many of Air Conditioner Filters require changing every 3-6 months. If you have any pets or you have completed any interior renovations, you may need to change your filter more often.

2. Unclog coils

To keep your A/C running efficiently, it’s important to clean debris, dust, and pollen from condenser coils. Your HVAC system manufacturer will recommend calling in a professional to unclog your coils due to their delicate nature. Typically, we use a combination of compressed air and coil-cleaning chemicals to bring life back into your air conditioner.

3. Let it breathe

Inside your home, ensure that the airflow coming from your vents is not blocked by furniture, carpet, or other items. Outside your home, check to make sure the A/C condenser is not blocked by obstructions such as plants, shrubs, and other garden debris.

4. Keep ducts airtight

Did you know that leaky air ducts can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system by as much as 20%? You can save money and protect the environment by making sure your air ducts are tight!

5. Fan setting

Make sure your fan is set to “auto” and not “on”. There’s no reason to have your air conditioner’s fans running all day and night regardless of the weather or if no one is at home!

6. Reduce the heat entering your home

Save yourself some money and save your A/C from having to work overtime in the hot summer months by drawing the drapes or closing the blinds during the day when possible.

7. Seasonal checks

The best thing you can do for the health, longevity, and warranty of your HVAC system is to have a licensed contractor perform regular maintenance.

Before calling a professional

If your air conditioner has a problem, you should check the following before calling for service:

  • Is the power on in your home?
  • Reset breakers or fuses for your air conditioner, as well as your furnace if applicable.
  • Is the thermostat set to cool?
  • Is the temperature set below the actual indoor temperature?
  • Have you changed your filter recently?

If your air conditioner is still not working after you tried the steps above, Cross Heating & Air Conditioning would gladly schedule a time for our licensed technician to come to your home and diagnose the problem.

In order to effectively diagnose and repair the issue, we ask that you please shut the A/C unit down, and keep the fan in the ON position.
